Heartland Center for Jobs & Freedom

The Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization serving low-wage workers, tenants, and their families throughout the Kansas City region and Missouri. With legal representation, community education, and policy advocacy, Heartland helps tenants and workers address housing instability, eviction attempts, unsafe living conditions, wage theft, workplace discrimination, and other barriers to economic security.

First, we defend tenants in eviction court, stopping hundreds of evictions each year.

Second, we handle impact litigation on behalf of low-wage workers and tenants facing issues such as wage theft, employment discrimination, unsafe working and living conditions, debt collection abuses, and housing discrimination.

And, third, we work with partner organizations to drive policy change and create better working and living conditions for all.

The Heartland Center is the only organization in the region that actively empowers low-wage workers and tenants with the tools they need to fight back when their rights are violated and help build a future where everyone lives free of exploitation, racism, abuse, and poverty.
